This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"What does ______ mean?" This is a question I often hear over the course of the day. My beginner ESL students are eager to increase their vocabulary, but the dictionaries we have in the classroom are extremely outdated and the definitions are difficult to understand.
My students are sixth grade English Language Learners in a New York City public school.
A few of my students have special needs as well. The self-contained class consists of 30 students, who speak six different languages. Their levels range from very beginner to very advanced. My class is like a family. The more advanced students take the initiative to help the beginner students, even if they do not speak the same native language. They all want to succeed and try their best to do so. However, such a large class, as well as the varying levels within the class, poses a great challenge. Due to large budget cuts, I do not have the materials I need to differentiate learning for my students while keeping them focused and engaged.
My Project
I am requesting 13 Longman English Dictionaries with CD-Roms. I currently have only one copy of this dictionary in the classroom, and every morning the students run to the book shelf to claim it for the day. The definitions in this dictionary are student-friendly, with sentences that my students can comprehend. The font used in the dictionary is easy to read. Pictures are included as well. These dictionaries will allow my students to be more independent and accountable for increasing their vocabulary. They can use the dictionaries to look up the meaning and spelling of unknown words.
Donations to my project will make a different in my students' lives.
The dictionaries they currently use are very intimidating. The print is small, there are many words on a page, and the definitions require the students to look up additional words. Student-friendly dictionaries will help my students in all content areas.
