Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are diverse: 98% of them are students of color. They come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are dreamers, some were born in the United States, some arrived with their families from countries like Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and the Philippines. My students are driven: more than 96% of them will go on to college, and of those, 98% of them will be the first in their family to do so. My students come from a troubled neighborhood: our community, though vibrant and diverse, is also known for poverty and one of the highest crime rates in the nation. However, these statistics - though relevant - do not define my students.
My students are scientists, mathematicians, chemists, poets, playwrights, athletes, and much more.
On the soccer pitch, these students athletes fight hard to represent their school and work to fulfill their dreams of playing college soccer.
My Project
I work at a small school of just over 500 students in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. Our small budget for sports leaves little room for the necessary equipment. We bought a number of soccer balls at the start of last season, and we only have half of them left; some have been lost over fences, some have been worn down by use, and others have mistakenly ended up in other coaches' ball bags. We need some new soccer balls for our next season!
I am working to improve my coaching on two fronts: tactical knowledge and culture-building.
This is where the literature comes in. Learning more about specific tactics and formations will help me as I plan sessions for the team, while improving my understanding of organizing successful teams will make me a better holistic leader.
