As a nurse in an elementary school, I have different responsibilities than a teacher. Of the three hundred and forty-three students in my building, I see roughly forty students a day. I manage the health for all the students and staff in my building and I am the only medical professional here. Healthy students make better learners and my job is to keep our kids healthy and learning.
My day consists of medication that is given daily, asthma checks, assisting students with special needs, students that get sick, and even students that just need a little care and attention.
A lot of my day consists of caring for students with special needs. My day also consists of a lot of charting and parent communication.
Multiple times a year I must check every student for head lice. I do vision and hearing screenings which might entail referring students to the appropriate doctor and helping parents find funds if they do not have insurance. I also keep track of the height and weight of my entire student body.
My Project
I'm asking for help with these items for emergency situations. These items will be a tremendous help during a natural disaster or an active shooter situation.
Unfortunately, this is a concern that I have to consider and take very seriously.
All building personal will be taught the proper use of these items. They will be be distributed to every classroom in my building.
The combat tourniquets I am asking for is a life saving device that can be applied to occlude blood flow . These can be used with only one hand! Along with these we will get high strength pressure bandages for fast response to severe bleeding or trauma and emergency blankets to keep an injured student warm until more help can arrive.
