Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is comprised of 24 wonderful second-grade students in the heart of the Silicon Valley in San Jose. The majority of my students are learning English as a second language and qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch, but this does not hold them back in any way. Students come to school daily with a drive to learn more academically, and I strive to do my best to give that to them. They deserve nothing but the most solid educational experience possible! Everyone at the school including teachers, principal, support staff, parents, and students, helps to make our school a wonderful place to be and learn. Help us make our educational experiences even more memorable!
My Project
Each day in our class, we do literacy centers for students to practice fundamental skills, like writing, reading fluency and comprehension, phonics, and word work. While these activities are happening in the room, I’m pulling small guided reading groups that are differentiated by level. One of our class centers is technology. During this time, students practice literacy skills using a program called Lexia. We also use iPads and computers for typing practice and math skills. It is crucial for headphones to be used on either the iPads or computers. Some students bring their own from home, but not all can afford to do so. We have access to some at school, but at this point of the year, they need to be replenished. Some students are using the programs without headphones, with the volume on low, and it’s still extremely hard for surrounding students to concentrate. Please help us personalize our learning! Thank you so much for taking an interest in our class!
