I teach in a prekindergarten through second grade elementary school in Wisconsin. I teach an active and eager group of 20 second grade students. Our school is made up of a diverse group of socio-economic backgrounds. We are a part of a rural community. In our district, more than half of the population participates in the free or reduced-price lunch program. Our school district also participates in a free universal breakfast program for all students.
My class loves to read and with the recent closing of school in the state for the rest of the school year, I worry my students will not have access to the books they need to grow as readers.
During these trying times of crisis schooling, the best thing students can do to maintain their skills is to read. But they must have access to good books! I would love to provide each of them with 3-4 new books to grow their reading skills.
My Project
I am seeking help to provide my students with four books each to have in their home library to help them continue to grow their literacy skills. I have selected books that I think will interest and encourage them to continue to read and love the power that a good book can provide. This is so important because libraries are closed and students do not have an easy way to get books to read.
Many families do not have the resources and books at home to help grow lifelong readers.
This project allows children to have access to good books. It is my goal to continue to feed my students' reading souls while they are at home during this difficult time.
