This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are eager and willing to work on change. They take our quote and work with it daily. "Berry Butterflies, Where a Caterpillar becomes her True Self." Our biggest challenge for the year would be staying focused as a group and educating others on how best to treat one another.
My students are young females who have been with the group for 5 years and am graduating High School.
They have successfully completed the work necessary for the butterfly change.
We currently have 58 members in the group, and 12 will be graduating this year. The girls have worked hard to achieve academic excellence and some are already honor roll students. We stress community service and we work on self-awareness, self-confidence and bringing our sisters with us along for the ride toward success. We are in what the state of NJ considers a struggling school in an urban district, so the students face many social and economic challenges, but they want so much more.
My Project
Since Berry's Butterflies started seven years ago, the program has graduated five seniors. This year, we will have double that number by graduating twelve seniors in one year. This record number comes with lots of needs.
The twelve students who will be graduating are in need of some essential supplies, the kind of things all college students need to have a positive jump start. The comforter set alone will give them the main ingredient for the college dorm life.
These students are up against community stress but have risen above the challenges. This jump start will help the families with supplies for their daughters.
