Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My "counselor's office" is my campus. I am a middle school counselor who helps oversee close to 1,200 students at Teague Middle. Through the last FOUR years, I've had some of the nicest, the brightest, the most talented, the best behaved, the hardest working, the funniest, the saddest, the most troubled, the poorest, the richest, the biggest pains, the most caring, the I-could-care-less, the shyest, the most outgoing, the physically challenged, the mentally challenged, and all those students in between. These students have made me a better counselor and for that reason alone I choose to do professional development. I strive to educate myself daily on new knowledge that will benefit my students.
My Project
Even though school counselors do not hold the exact title, they are educators for their students. Professional school counselors may teach their students academic, social, personal development, or career skills to help them achieve their potential. Everything we learn goes towards our students and staff. By participating in continuing education, we are also keeping up with the current trends of our students. Ultimately, it is the role of the school counselor to develop and implement a school counseling program that best fits the needs of their students and aligns with the mission of their school. Similar to other counseling careers, professional school counselors must also adhere to a set of standards, competencies, and ethics. Encompassing all of these responsibilities and reaching competency, professional school counselors can further expand their knowledge and experience through additional certifications or specialty training.
