My Students

We are a rural high school located close to the Virginia border in North Carolina. Our small school struggles to recruit and keep players on our athletic teams. Besides being "out in the country,” over 25% of our students have special needs and over 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We are not a large school and do not have many resources; however, the teachers and staff here have big hearts and we make do with grit, determination and a passion for academics and athletics. We love our students dearly and are committed to their success.

My Project

The Coronavirus is here, schools are closed and I am teaching visual art and digital photography from home. We were told we had two weeks to prepare for online learning. I researched and watched video tutorials on Zoom video conferencing. In Zoom I can easily use my phone as a document camera. I had all my lessons worked out and was looking forward to seeing my students and demonstrating for them online.

But then, wham, the first day of online teaching I was told Zoom was banned and we had to use Google Meet -- but then where is my document camera?!?

I scrambled to find a way to present from my iPhone on my personal home computer. The third-party software that turned my iPhone into a document camera gave my computer a virus. As I was literally pulling my hair out and talking to a co-worker, they calmly suggested I write a grant for a real document camera for my school-issued Chromebook. A light went off in my head. They were right!!
