Do you remember how hard it was to sit still all day and try to focus on the lesson? I teach 6th grade special education language arts.
My students have different learning styles and need a variety of seating options.
They are inquisitive and energetic children who enjoy active learning opportunities. They are most engaged in their work when they are comfortable. For some students, this may mean they need to have a table with a lot of individual space; other students may need the ability to move.
My Project
The materials, such as the CO-Z Active Learning Stool, will help my students to be engaged learners. Movement has been tied to helping students to focus and recall. We currently have an assortment of student desks, tables, Adirondack chairs, floor rockers, and a bungee chair. We need more seating that will allow all of the students choices each day.
My students love having the ability to choose what type of seating will help them to focus and be an active participant in the class.
My students take this choice as a responsibility and realize that if a seat is not working for them, they should choose another. Having choices helps the students take control of their learning, In addition, movement is linked to decreased negative behaviors.
