Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher of Special Education English Language Arts in Paterson NJ. My students are all on free or reduced lunch and come from underprivileged homes.They are classified students whose ability to read and understand what they're trying to read based on diagnostic tests put these 11th and 12th graders at a 4th grade reading level. They learn best when assignments are short and engage their interests, so using worksheets, and interactive sites are our main focus. These are proud kids who are trying but need to be guided through the work at a slower pace, one fundamental at a time. Due to Covid19, we are using remote learning. My ability to provide them with exciting web-based lessons depends on my ability to download and modify lessons, and worksheets for them, but my computer at home is incapable of doing that. It does not have enough memory to download and store the web based items. It shuts down due to lack of memory, will not download articles, and documents that I need for the kids, it won't allow me to save items all due to lack of memory. The old computer is preventing me from meeting their needs.
My Project
I am a teacher of Special Education English Language Arts in NJ. My students need every advantage I can give them to graduate and find their path in life. They deserve information about job opportunities and career paths which can transform their lives in ways that negate the potentially destructive outcomes which the city environment of Paterson has been known to perpetuate. Their skills as English Language Arts students must be cultivated and strengthened to the point where they can confidently compete in the Society outside of Paterson NJ. These students deserve the opportunity to reach their potential and if possible continue their post-secondary education in a trade school, college or university, the military, or the workforce I want to be able to open doors of opportunity for them by providing them with the level of instruction that students in other towns are provided. Our district has been learning remotely since March 17, 2020 and I have been struggling with my old laptop's ability to connect to the wifi in my house, and have run out of memory on the device such that it will not save documents and at times freezes and shuts down showing the message "not enough memory available." I have tried external memory devices, but they only work if the computer does not shut itself down. This old laptop and it's issues are preventing me from fully engaging my students with interactive websites, and materials that I cannot download and then upload to my virtual classroom. My district does not provide devices for staff, due to budgetary restrictions. I am looking to get a new laptop that will be for school use only and give me the ability to provide the level of instruction afforded to students in affluent districts.
