Help Me Display Their Work!

My students need Mesh Panel Display Walls to display their artworks and boost their self confidence.

I teach Art at a middle class high school in East Texas. Many of my students are taking Art for the first time and have never felt the thrill of exhibiting their works in public. By and large, they are a very talented bunch who are proud of their art but who don’t know about the thrill of public display. I would like to make it easier to display their works, allowing them the surge in self confidence and pride that comes from others’ appreciation of their personal expressions. The problem with most display systems is that they are usually cumbersome and often damage the artworks. If a work is heavy, it can fall off the wall or window to which it was attached and end up getting stepped on or worse. When we do hang works, often there is little display room and so not that many students get to ‘strut their stuff’. These obstacles make displaying works difficult and unappealing, both to the teachers hanging the works and the students trusting that their works won’t be hurt in the display process. In the end, many students’ works end up not getting displayed because it’s just too much of a hassle for everyone involved. At an Art Teachers’ conference recently, I saw a new product that seems like it could solve all of these problems and more. The Mesh Panel Display Walls produced by Flourish Company are lightweight and easily stored when not in use. However, I think that these panels would be in use for much of the school year because they could be moved easily from one area to another for different display purposes. During the regular school months, they could be held in the cafeteria or the library and could show the current projects that students in the different levels of Art have recently completed. In the Spring semester, we have an Art Exhibit in conjunction with the other members of the Fine Art department. The panels could be used to show high quality work in this venue as well. Finally, towards the end of the school year, we could have a final Art Exhibit of student works that won awards at the various contests we participate in throughout the year—kind of a ‘Best of the Best’ for our department. As an added bonus, any time that the panels are not being used by the Art Department, we could loan them to other teachers who want to display their students' works. Best of all, because the Display Walls are two sided and so large, there would be 250 square feet of display room, which would open up much more room and allow many more students to be on display at a time. Because of the nature of the mesh material, we would no longer have to pin or tape works to walls. A simple system of S-hooks and clips would make damage to students’ artworks a thing of the past and would allow the students peace of mind when lending works to be displayed. More importantly, the students would be able to experience the excitement of seeing their work on display. The confidence boost most students get from the compliments received about their artworks is immeasurable and would give them a real sense of accomplishment. This sense of pride often translates to other areas of a student’s school life and could greatly impact his or her attitudes and behaviors, both in the art room and elsewhere. With your generous donation, my Art students could gain a new sense of self that would empower them and give them a new and exciting venue for their expressions.
