My students live in a rural county in Tennessee where poverty and unemployment rates are extremely high.
My students come from a high poverty, rural area and financial constraints often prevent access to technology and school supplies for academic projects.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
These things may prevent them from getting ahead in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". We take for granted the access we have to toiletries and other resources. I hope to inspire my students to collaborate on projects and to continue to build lifetime skills.
My students need personal hygiene kits so they can have a sense of normalcy in their lives. Many or displaced or homeless, and they will not have access to necessary bathing items. They either don't have to money, or need training to gain these important life skills. By teaching them the importance of self care, we can affect their entire life and future success. We can help them for the rest of their lives get jobs and present themselves well. We can really change how they perceive themselves and their future. We can help them achieve so much more in high school.
