Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fifth grade in an economically-depressed neighborhood in California. My students are bright and curious, but they do not have access to materials that will allow them to transcend their neighborhoods. I want to provide them with activities, such as chess, that will provide them with higher-level thinking skills and will give them strategies they can apply in the greater community. I want them to go to college!
Our school district is facing draconian budget cuts, and is focused squarely on pencil and paper tests. My students are gifted, and have the ability to work outside the box. However, we have no materials to accommodate their intellectual needs. These kids need to be challenged; they can bubble in answers all day long and perform remarkably well. They need more! Their parents are not financially able to provide enrichment, nor is the school district. I'm hoping some generous soul will provide the funds to give these amazing individuals a chess club. They will learn problem-solving skills and strategies they can use their whole lives!
This class bundle of chess sets will benefit my students in that they will be able to develop skills not accessible to most inner-city kids. They see peers joining gangs, engaging in crime, and dropping out of school. I'm trying to make fifth grade as engaging and dynamic as I can for these bright and enthusiastic learners. Having a chess club would be an excellent diversion for students who might otherwise get bored and turn to more negative pastimes. Please help me!
Your help will make it possible for my students to engage in a strategic game that is generally considered "white" or "upper-class". If they can learn and excel at chess, they will be empowered and have greater faith in their intellectual abilities. Additionally, they will develop problem-solving strategies they can apply to other areas in their lives. An active mind is a productive mind. I'm trying to engage these children so they can see their amazing potential! Thank you for your assistance.
