Help Me Become A Reading Teacher Who Changes Lives!
I need to attend the Summer reading institute at Columbia University to bring back research-based, effective strategies so that my diverse readers can succeed!
My students are bubbly, love STEAM projects, like to read and seem willing to try anything once! We are a Title I school, and we serve low-income families. Half my class is made of refugee and immigrant kids from Somalia, Burma, India, Thailand and other nations. We have a great range of learners including some who are first-generation English learners. They love hands-on activities, technology, art, music, and books!
Curious, kinesthetic, and creative, my students thrive on challenge and novel learning opportunities.
These bright, sparkly-eyed kids are looking to us to give them a holistic, challenging and inclusive education. Third grade is a critical year for reading, and I want to arm myself with the best, research-based training to create reading turnarounds in the classroom!
My Project
My 3rd graders' reading levels range from Kindergarten to grade 5. Finding effective differentiation strategies in a group with 23 kids is a daily challenge. I want to serve my ESOL students, struggling and advanced readers gain comprehension and word attack skills, so that they became intelligent readers!
The Lucy Calkins Reading Institute will equip me with engaging strategies, ideas and tools to become the kind of reading teacher my students need!
Just by using some tools from this program informally, I find many of my students have a budding love for literature. They sometimes get lost in a story or book, and can't wait to talk to me about what they are reading! I want to learn deeply about these ideas so I can help them become lifelong readers!
