Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a first year teacher working in a low-income school, I find myself spending hundreds of hours making and crafting materials for my class. Many of these endless hours of work have taken away some of my energy and motivation for teaching. Nonetheless, my ambition does pay off. I can truly say that it has been a very successful learning experience for my students.
I cannot imagine teaching without Vocabcicle, Feed My Belly, or even Kaboom. These are games I have made to teach vocabulary words to my fourth graders--all thirty-four of them. Because of these resources that I have provided, my students are more enthusiastic about their learning, improve their understanding of difficult words, and obtain better grades in class.
My goal for this year is to advance the math score in the fourth grade level. Although I have been very successful in teaching and getting supplies for Language Arts, I have very few resources available for mathematics. My school uses the Saxon Math program and we also have the Accelerated math program, but that is the end of the resources for me. I have very few items such as: the Judy Clock, Fraction board, wooden block in different shapes, and three math posters.
I would like to set up a math center for my class that includes: educational math games, manipulative materials, and different math worksheets for practice.
I would love to see my students become more energetic and hold the same excitement in math as they do in Language Arts. And I know we could with your support! It would be a dream come true for me to be able to see my students gaining access to supplies such as using more hands-on materials, thus enhancing the quality of their learning in the classroom and increasing their eagerness to learn math.
