Help Me Add Sensory to My SEL Classroom

My Project

What I love about my students is that they have to overcome obstacles every day; however, they are invested in doing what it takes to succeed. In the Be Somebody Success Center, I assist students who struggle in the classroom, whether academically or emotionally. We sit together and collaborate to come up with strategies for them to implement that will assist them in managing their emotions, making responsible choices, organizing their time and resources wisely, and becoming an active participant in their own learning experience.

The supplies and sensory items purchased in this project will assist my students in goal-setting to map out this second half of the school year and give them tangible ways to manage stress, especially around the time for state-mandated testing.

When goal setting, my students and I choose 1-3 goals to work on, and we identify action steps that will ensure that we reach those goals. The motivation ball and other supplies will be fun ways to take the pressure off and get my students to open up about the things they would like to accomplish.

The sensory items will assist them in managing their emotions and decreasing stress. When students are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, items such as the weighted lap blankets or the sensory circles will allow them to release some of that tension. When students are sad or angry, it helps to focus on a game or to sit in a quiet space and play with sensory items such as the rainfall sticks or watch the fish swim around in the sensory lamp.
