Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a tenth grade math teacher teaching Algebra and Geometry at a small school in the Oakland Unified School District. My students, who are all students of color, are on average, years behind, in math. Many have little or no confidence in their math skills or interest in the subject. My job is not only to help them achieve at the high levels that I know they are capable of but also to help them build their self confidence and learn to enjoy studying math! This is especially important as they will take the exit exam for the first time at the end of this year, which they have to pass to earn a diploma.
One of the biggest challenges in teaching math is to quickly assess which students are understanding the concepts and who still needs more explanation. Since students are not always willing to let me know if they don't understand, I need a good way to check whether everyone in the room is able to solve the type of problem that we're working on. Individual whiteboards are a great way to do this. Students can work out a problem, write the answer on the whiteboard, and hold them up for me to see. This makes the class more interactive--and students love writing on them! I am asking for a set of 30 mini dry-erase boards, erasers, and markers, plus an extra set of markers for when the first set wears out. These would be used by all 100 of my students on a daily basis.
One other challenge is helping my students to stay organized, especially since our school does not have enough Algebra books for the students to take home. It is important for them to keep their notes and vocabulary in good order so that they have something to reference when completing their homework or studying for quizzes or tests. Each student should have a set of 5 dividers to keep in their binder to organize “do now”, notes, class work, vocabulary, and homework. I would like 100 sets of dividers to provide to my students to help them get organized.
Lastly I am fortunate enough to have class sets of compasses and protractors, but I do not have a class set of rulers. They are important for graphing in Algebra and for constructions and many other uses in Geometry. I am asking for a set of 30 rulers for my students to use in class.
With these materials, my students will be more engaged in class and more organized--which will lead directly to higher achievement in math!
