Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an inner city school in Richmond, CA. Most of my students come from low-income families and many are learning English for the first time. In this environment, math is often a strength for students who struggle in other areas.
However, they still lack general background knowledge about mathematical concepts in the world. In particular, reading clocks is a challenge for many students. The analog clocks at our school do not function much of the time and most students have only digital clocks at home. This skill though is an important standard in second grade. To help remedy this problem, I am asking for a class set of plastic clocks with working gears and hands that students can manipulate. They also show the difference between AM and PM time with a small sun/moon icon that rotates as you change the time. These clocks would allow each student the opportunity to experience time telling in a hands-on sense and would greatly improve their abilities in this area.
Additionally, since math is an area of strength for many low readers, I would like to use books about math to motivate them to read more. Research shows that reading books of high interest or on topics the reader already knows about improves reading speed, accuracy, and comprehension. Therefore, I am requesting a full Math Matters library set that includes 24 exciting math books at a variety of reading levels.
Finally, I would like to capitalize on students' interest and abilities in math to strengthen their independent work skills through the use of math centers. These 15 centers each focus on a different math skill and allow students practice in following directions and working independently in addition to math. Having these centers would also allow me to provide more targeted small group instruction to students who are struggling while the others are actively engaged in centers work.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of my requests and your support for the ideal that one day all children will have the opportunity for an excellent education.
