Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in the auxiliary section are faced with several challenges. While many students center their attention on one instrument, auxiliary players have several. My students are very dedicated to developing good playing technique. The biggest challenge they face is not having a temple block set.
I am very fortunate to have hardworking humble students.
They have mastered basic playing technique of the woodblock, cymbal, sleigh bells and so much more. The school has most of the needed instruments for the auxiliary section. Many of these instruments are not in the best of shape, but we have somehow managed to make things work. I have spent countless hours trying to glue parts back together. Several students have even assisted me, “Ms. C, it would work better it we bent it this way.” Many of my students come from disadvantaged homes and receive reduced or free lunch. Regardless of their backgrounds, they are hard workers. That is why I fight so hard for them to receive the same learning experience as students from privileged schools. This situation is different from others, I do not have an old temple block set to fix or use. We simply do not have a temple block set at all.
My Project
A temple block set is an essential part of the auxiliary section. It is also one of the instruments that beginning percussionists learn to play. It is a very crucial instrument that cannot be substituted. With this instrument, auxiliary players will learn how to associate temple blocks with their designated pitches written on the staff. I want my students to gain the learning experience of playing temple blocks as well as play music compositions that feature the instrument.
Again, this case is very different; I simply do not have a temple block set.
My students are missing out on the opportunity to learn the basic skill of note placement identification and playing technique development of temple blocks. If my students receive a temple block set, they will no longer be lacking in their music learning experience of playing different instruments. Please help me to give them the chance to succeed.
