My students love to read and love coming to my library. They are excited when I get in new books and look forward to reading new books from their favorite authors. Even though most of my students have very few books at home and are economically disadvantaged, my students have an excitement for reading and are a creative and caring bunch!
With all the stress on test scores lately, reading for pleasure is one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to improve test scores.
You can help make reading fun! Students will be on teams competing against each other in the "Battle of the Books". What could be better than getting kids to read and improving comprehension in a fun competitive way. Students are split into teams based on the titles read and then are asked comprehension questions to test their reading skills. This will be an in school competition but we may even be able to compete against other schools in Broward County. You can help by supplying them with multiple copies of the 15 Sunshine State Young Readers award books. Let's get reading!
