As a teacher serving in a low-income school district with a higher than average ratio of students with disabilities, it has become a necessity to find innovative ways to engage students in learning.
Our students lack the opportunities to engage in project-based, authentic learning that fosters independent thinking and creativity.
In addition, our economically disadvantaged and students with disabilities subgroups are consistently under performing their peers. Our goal is to increase their engagement in school and content and foster a deeper level of thinking in order to give them the skills to be successful when they graduate.
My Project
We currently need storage for our art supplies so students can easily find their supplies for their projects. Providing a cart for our students will allow them to find their acrylic paints and brushes, vinyl, and other supplies easily, as well as keep the classroom organized for the next class that comes in during the day. Students utilize the art supplies for a variety of projects in our makerspace, including painting their 3D printed models, designing t-shirts, and stop motion film. In addition, we are not permitted to use tape on the walls, and the command strips will allow me to create a wall gallery to display student projects and work.
