Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade in Brooklyn, New York. About ninety-five percent of the students receive free lunch, and many are English Language Learners. The majority of our day is devoted to literacy, which means that science is not as much of a focus as I would like it to be. One way that I can integrate science throughout the day is to have my students enjoy non-fiction books during our literacy time. Most of the fantastic non-fiction books that my students love are too hard for them to read by themselves. By providing students with books on their level in our classroom library, they will be able to enjoy non-fiction books with ease because the text will be at a level that they can read independently.
I am asking you to help my students by generously providing funding to purchase 70 non-fiction books in the areas of physical, earth, and life science. These books will allow me to share the excitement of non-fiction texts with my students, integrate science into literacy, and help foster a love of non-fiction books in the entire class.
