Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have been very fortunate to acquire books on many different reading levels and subjects of interest. However, with no carpet or pillows, the library area does not encourage my students to spend time reading.
I work with fourth and fifth grade students that have mild to moderate disabilities, from specific learning disabilities to orthopedic impairments to students with Down Syndrome, and everything in between.
Many are able to address on-grade level standards and work in the general education classroom with minimal assistance. For some, however, addressing the general education curriculum and/or being in the general education classroom is not appropriate. This is due to either significant behavior concerns or academic deficits.
My Project
With this rug and pillows, my students will be able to choose a book from the library (on his or her reading level) and get comfortable. When people say that they "curl up with a good book", the "curling up" (or getting comfortable) is half the pleasure! I want them to linger in the library area, reading as much as they can, for as long as they can.
My students are reluctant readers.
Acquiring books if interest on the correct levels was half the battle. Now, we need a space that encourages longer times spent reading. The rug and pillows will make our library into that space.
