Help Make My Students Curious About British Literature!
My students need several class sets of Mark Haddon's book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
My students are creative, energetic, and very busy. Each student here majors in an artistic discipline, either visual art, vocal or instrumental music, drama, technical theater, or dance, and each student receives several hours of arts instruction every day, in addition to our regular academic curriculum.
It is always difficult for me to describe a "typical" student, because our student body is extremely diverse.
They come to us from every part of New York City, sometimes commuting great distances in order to take advantage of our specialized arts programming. I am continually impressed by their collective talent and determination, and I hope to do everything possible to give them an engaging curriculum.
My 10th Grade British Literature class has spent the past few months reading some very challenging texts, including Shelley's Frankenstein and Shakespeare's Othello. As we head into the spring semester, I am hoping to find some more recent titles to help keep them interested. I want them to know that British Literature includes a wide variety of voices, from the canonical to the contemporary.
I think that Mark Haddon's Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is an engaging and fascinating book that my students will really enjoy.
I am hoping that it will open up questions about story-telling, perspective, and different types of intelligence. Unfortunately, since we only have a few copies on hand, I am requesting enough so that all of my students will be able to read it.
