Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a juvenile detention center. These students range from 10 to 18 years old; they are all at risk and many are far behind in all of their courses. Many times, we get students who dislike school or just chose not to go to school. Many of our students have made bad choices, but our facility is there to help rehabilitate them. We work hard with these students to help them catch up in their courses and also find adults or authority figures they can trust.
Our job is more than teaching at this facility: it is helping build up students who can become successful members of society and better their lives.
In my PE class, we are able to learn many activities and skills that they can carry over to the other parts of their lives. We exercise and learn how to take care of our bodies, but we also learn leadership skills and how to work together as a team. I love building relationships with my students and watching them grow physically as well as mentally and emotionally! Many times, our kids just need to know they are worth it and that someone cares.
My Project
Our equipment is limited due to very little funding. Our students deserve the chance to have options they can utilize to better their self-esteem, fitness levels, and health. We want them to be lifelong learners with knowledge and skills they can utilize at any age.
We want to show them and help them learn a variety of ways they can exercise to stay in shape and stay healthy.
Any help you can provide to bring updated equipment to our students will help our program be successful. Our students deserve the best chance to better themselves, and I want to provide them with as many opportunities as possible.
