I am the luckiest teacher in the world because I get to spend each day with enthusiastic little learners who are eager. They love to learn and find answers to questions. I work with many students who are English language learners and students with special needs, but they are the hardest workers I know! My students need a comfortable environment so they feel at ease and confident each day and ready to learn. Many students do not have manny books at home. They need classroom books that are engaging so foster a love of learning. These students usually have farther to go but reach goals because of their effort.
Teaching math to first graders means building a foundation for future computation. My goal is to get all my first graders adding and subtracting fluently by the end of the year.
First graders need daily exposure of adding and subtracting with objects and manipulatives.
Having the ETA hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit with Number Strings, Math Talks will help students build knowledge and confidence. It will give all my students, including those who are learning English and those with special needs deeper understanding of number sense. This fluency kit will also be helpful because as a co-teaching classroom, there are many adults in my classroom. This easy to follow teacher guide will help us make sure we are all reinforcing the correct skills to maximize instruction during our small groups.
