Mr. Tian from Yazoo City MS is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to continue their progress using basic supplies, like dry erase markers, erasers, and pencil sharpeners!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
At a school where 99% of students receive free and reduced lunch and an 87% attendance rate and where the daily attendance rate is often below 70%, my students demonstrate an ambitious nature. Desiring to be doctors and nurses, they shoot for the moon in hopes of at least landing among the stars.
My students are interested in learning, but are afraid of showing their interest in intellectual gains.
Some students fear success because of the perception that they have betrayed their families and culture. Other students feel the presence of gangs demands their attention, although their involvement is merely superficial and representative of the lack of alternative options. Still more students want to experience success not at a failing school, but at nationally and internationally competitive institutions.
My kids have really enjoyed using the projector to take notes and it has really increased efficiency and effectiveness in our classroom. We project problems on the board, and students take turns coming up and working problems. Having recently run out of dry-erase markers at a school that does not have funds to purchase more, my students would really benefit from continuing to work problems to learn from each other on the white board. Also, having a pencil sharpener would really help those students who cannot afford to purchase them.
This resource would allow me to overcome the fact that my school did not order copy paper, that other teachers cave and let students use notes on their assessments, and that the culture surrounding my school feels education is merely sitting in a desk and not talking.
This project is about making doctors and nurses, preparing them to achieve academic and professional success, and inspiring them to reinvest in a community that struggles to maintain hope.
