We are a first grade family in suburban Iowa. Our school highly values diversity, creativity and leadership and our classrooms definitely reflect that. We have a diverse population of learners and believe that our diversity makes us stronger and smarter.
Creativity, engineering skills, and purposeful play are such an important part of recognizing and educating the whole child.
As a teacher, I try to create a space with my students that values their ideas and is as creative as possible. I want my students to grow their brains through the arts as well as academics.
My Project
In our learning community, we integrate art into math, science, and social studies as much as possible. Giving our youngest students hands-on experiences to create and be imaginative with our learning affords them the opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding of BIG topics like space, communities, economics, symmetry, and fractions.
Studying art and giving students time to create honors their individuality and shows that our classroom values the whole child.
Keeping creativity and wonder alive during the school hours is a priority and we try to let students take control of their own learning as much as possible. We will use the different types of paint, oil pastels, and dough throughout our day and over the course of the school year to create art projects that deepen our learning.
