My classroom is a fun and interactive place where science comes to life. We don't just talk about science, we DO science!
We are a charter school in southern Davis County, Utah.
We have 300 students in grades 7-9. Half of our students are honors students, but they are ALL amazing! We have a growing interest in science and STEM and are trying to meet this need with two Science Olympiad teams.
My Project
Our teams need to engineer and build structures, study scientific information, and prepare for three competitions. Our first, district, will be in January. Regionals is at the end of February and State, should we qualify (we did last year!), will be in April. This international organization helps students to explore career fields ranging from technical writing to engineering to laboratory forensics. They apply real-world scenarios to these events where a team of 15 works on studying, building, and preparing information to show their knowledge, understanding, and creative application of science, math, and technology in a practical, solution-based setting
It would help my students to have high quality materials to study from as well as not requiring the students, parents, and teachers to buy materials that are consumed by the building events.
Identification of fossils, balsa wood for bridges, glow plugs for our wiring and energy transfer event, as well as a launcher to practice our bottle rocket launches would be extremely useful to help practice and refine our models instead of testing them at competitions for the first time due to cost limits.
