Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

We have very busy days in my room! Every morning, students receive math and reading instruction, then go to special classes such as adapted P.E. and music. During the afternoons, we target IEP goals and life skills instruction. Students work on hygiene routines, stocking shelves, and filing papers.

I have five students in my class this year, all with severe disabilities.

I work at a public separate high school for students who were not successful out in regular special education classrooms. All of my students have been diagnosed with autism, and four of the students also have other disabilities, such as hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities, and cerebral palsy. I am lucky to have such a small class, as I can really devote time to academic and life skills instruction. Every day, we have reading, math, and science instruction along with life skills/vocational instruction.

My Project

There are many special education apps available on the iPad that my students could use to reinforce skills taught during group instruction. The sensory items I requested would be EXTREMELY helpful to one student I have who is on the autism spectrum and is also deaf. He often becomes aggressive because he has difficulty communicating with others, so the sensory items would help him regulate his emotions and calm down quickly.

The iPad would allow my students to practice their math/reading skills during down time and the sensory items would benefit all students. The sensory items would especially help my student who is deaf, as he tends to get aggressive when there is a communication breakdown. If he had these extra sensory items available to him, he could use them to calm himself down instead of having a tantrum.
