Help me give my students the chance to get the right instruments that are needed for them to experience musicians as performers, listeners, and composers!
As an elementary school general music teacher, I have a LOT of students. My youngest students have just started kindergarten and my fifth grade students are already on their way to middle school.
Within any given week, approximately 450 students will pass through my classroom and these students are the reason that I come to school everyday!
I recently moved from Washington, D.C. to the Midwest and change is hard. Particularly as a new teacher, feeling welcomed and accepted is not always the easiest at a new school. However, my students have made me feel welcomed since my first day. From greetings and hellos in the hallways to saying thank you at the end of lessons, my students help keep me motivated so I can help them be the best that they can be. As a thank you to them for making me feel welcomed and at home in their school, I want to do my best to help them grow as musicians!
My Project
In 2017, a study in my school's state brought together top industry experts to examine our approach to how we fund schools to fully prepare all students for future success. The study determined that it takes $14,155 per pupil per year. This number is twice as much allocated for the students of my school. We are the lowest funded district in our county. The purpose of this project is to help my students take the next step in their music education with the help of the right materials.
In this project, there are a variety of musical items that will allow aural, visual, and kinesthetic learners to achieve a variety of successes.
Some of these items are boomwhackers, rhythm sticks, and a tenor ukulele. The additional boomwhackers will help more of my students have better access to playing boomhackers. Our current set is very small and limits the number of students who can play boomwhackers at any given time. With a new set of rhythm sticks, I can replace our worn and splintered sticks with a set that also has better volume control. Lastly, the tenor ukulele will serve as a teaching tool to help our students learn to play our classroom set of ukuleles which does not include one for teacher demonstrations.
