Help me give my students Amazon Kindle Fire 7 tablets and English to Spanish/Spanish to English dictionaries in order for them to obtain and develop English proficiency.

When taking a look at our student population, you will immediately notice we are predominately Hispanic/Latino. Due to our name and location, we are privileged to attract many Hispanic/Latino families, some of which speak English and Spanish, while others only speak Spanish. We have the blessing of serving our Spanish speaking students and their families in their own language. Many of these students and their families depend on interpreters and translators, like me, to interact with teachers and staff.
Our school motto is, "Building a Legacy of Success," and it serves as a reminder of the big picture at the start of each day.
We believe those words and try hard daily to prove it to our students with our actions. Like many young people around the world, our students deal with the challenges of acceptance, self-esteem, and their ever-changing emotions. They are faced with the challenge of defying the odds and in some cases even making history in their families. Since we are a public charter school, purposely placed in a low-income/high-risk neighborhood, some of my students will be the first to complete high school and eventually graduate college!
Using the Amazon Fire 7 tablets will be a simple yet powerful tool for my students who are currently developing and building English literacy. Considering the fact that lectures, discussions, and even textbooks are in English in all general education classrooms, having an interpreter/translator at their fingertips will be indispensable. The use of word-to-word dictionaries will primarily be used during assessments. This will also be a useful tool for decoding text and finding cognates easily.
Equitable access to the curriculum is the goal of this project!
The truth is, for my Spanish only students, my direct minutes with them are very limited in comparison to their whole school day. It is my wish to provide them with tools of self-efficacy and self-advocacy. These tablets and dictionaries will give students a new confidence and allow them to rely more on their own investigation, thus creating a greater sense of ownership in their education. Lastly, these tools will be a priceless investment in my students who wish to venture off and work less directly with me while maintaining a "lifeline" of sorts.
