NECP is a new public charter school, that is about halfway through its third year. Our diverse school, students speak 10 different primary languages at home, serves 265 students this year. The majority of students are from Northeast Minneapolis followed by North Minneapolis, Columbia Heights, South Minneapolis, and other surrounding neighborhoods. We prepare our students for lifelong success through inquiry-based learning, social-emotional learning, and talent development.
Our students are curious, active learners.
As an International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate school, our students learn about people and places all over the world through inquiry. These traits are utilized across all subjects. Social-emotional learning is also a big part of students' learning and day-to-day at NECP, and students engage in morning meetings, closing circles, and other opportunities to practice these lessons learned.
My Project
Our school-wide library opened its doors in October 2016, in our third year of operation. We did not have the space for a school library, only classroom libraries, our first two years. With our move to a bigger building, last summer, this school year is the first time our students have had a school-wide library. While it is a fairly new library, we’ve been lucky to have had so many parents, staff, students and community members volunteer their time to make it a reality.
Book donations from the community have also poured in, creating a library full of books of all levels, for all grades; however, what we are now more in need of, are guided, leveled readings.
Having a robust and culturally-relevant school library, full of books at appropriate levels, is essential for our students.
These readers, that we are trying to purchase, can bring us one step closer to that need, for our students, in the lower grades (K-1). With these books, we can add onto our ever-growing collection of guided readings, so teachers can check them out to do small-group lessons of up to six students. The students can also engage in conversations and activities about the text they read.
