This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember your favorite part of PE in grade school and middle school? Physical activity is essential to the quality of life for every person. Unfortunately, with children with autism, meaningful exercise is difficult to incorporate into their day.
My students attend a charter school for kids with autism in New York.
Their autism varies in severity from moderate to severe and their ages range from 12-16. They have such different personalities, and all are capable of learning and touching the hearts of others around them.
My Project
Physical activity is essential to the quality life of any person. Unfortunately, with children with autism, meaningful exercise is difficult to incorporate into their day due to potential problem behaviors and the lack of special education. Also, it is harder in general to provide physical education that is geared towards individuals with disabilities.
The medicine balls will help my students gain physical education in an individualized way that will help them receive the exercise that is essential to their quality of life.
As a special education teacher I believe my students disabilities challenge me to be more creative.
They are only limited because we place limits on them. By teaching my students with adaptive exercise options they will be able to have the physical activity they deserve.
