Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over 100 students each day enter the Health classroom. Here, students in grades five through eight will acquire skills in decision making, communication and goal setting through hands on activities. These are life skills that are necessary for health, wellness and success.
Students range in age from 9 year old fifth graders to 14 year old eighth graders.
Over 600 students will enter the Health classroom each week for one hour of core concept education and skills practice. Students are diverse, representing all socioeconomic, cultural, health and learning backgrounds. One thing they all have in common is they are impressionable young learners. Our school is one of four grammar schools in the district. We are fortunate to provide health education at all four grade levels in the middle school. No child is immune to the pressures of adolescence. In our school, drugs are no exception. Even our youngest students are exposed at home or in their community to pressures their young minds cannot comprehend. This is why Health classes and resistance skills are so important.
My Project
The Drug Identification Guide 3D chart is used in multiple ways. During Open House, parents are introduced to the reality that their children likely will be exposed to the drugs they are looking at on this chart. The guide is displayed in the Health classroom all year. When students have free time in class, they often choose to look at the chart. The display evokes many questions that help students begin to understand the consequences of drug use and what to look out for. Finally, older students learn to access important information from the chart about drugs, including short and long term health and legal consequences. The message to "Just Say KNOW," is reinforced over four years of Health Education. Students learn the dangers and consequences that will help them make informed decisions and build necessary resistance skills. Having a visual display such as this drug chart opens communication and exposes them to the reality and truth about drugs in a hands on way.
Drug addiction affects everyone.
With the rise in heroin addiction and overdoses in the US, it is important to educate our youth early on and give them the facts in a way that grabs their attention. My old drug chart continues to be the most popular display I present, but the information is out of date. With donations to this project, I can offer the students updated information that will be relevant to their health and safety.
