Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Keeping up with the latest findings in science requires diligence for anyone. For an English language learner struggling to master a new speech and biology at once, the challenge can be overwhelmingly intimidating.
Our High School is a grade 9-12 public school dedicated to meeting the needs of recent immigrant students in a large urban setting.
We work with speakers of diverse language, cultural and educational backgrounds to ensure all receive access to the learning that will allow them to achieve their own American dreams. As a biology teacher, I struggle to overcome these personal differences, as well as the abstract nature of my discipline, by using providing as many materials as I can which reach the kids 'where they are.' Usually, this takes the form of hands-on work, but to be true scientists, they need to be consumers of information. I need to be able to put timely texts in a variety of languages into their hands. An e-Reader would significantly enhance my ability to provide multilingual texts at a variety of reading levels to the classroom.
My Project
By obtaining a reasonably priced e-Reader, like the one they've all seen on the train an in commercials on TV, we can bring the world of science texts to the whole class with an economy of space and expense. The eBook can provide a range of readings to kids, allowing them to mark-up, save and share particularly interesting or challenging passages. It also creates a novel and exciting aspect to reading to pique the interest of kids who may otherwise have resisted paper textbooks and magazines before. The thrill of the new may be just the thing to get a resistant reader to dive into texts!
DonorsChoose.org support opens access to a disadvantaged population of students struggling to learn new content, a new language and a new way of life in the United States.
