Ms. Van Gilder from New Orleans LA is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need computer mice and headphones to facilitate and improve their use of class laptops. I will use the reference book to plan for brief typing instruction.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are always eager to pull out our class laptops and log in to Compass Learning, PBSKids, or Accelerated Reader. But many (crucial!) laptop keys are missing, so computers can be a hindrance rather than help.
This is a wonderful class of 3rd graders-going-on-8th graders.
My students thrive when given classroom responsibilities, meaningful and engaging tasks, not to mention the full-time attention of their teachers and peers! We are working on personal responsibility, respect for others, and are practicing increased time working independently. We are very proud of our school's progress -- four years ago, it was the worst in the state of Louisiana -- and are a vital part of that ongoing effort for academic achievement.
In English/Language Arts, we devote part of class time to activities on the computer; students are challenged by Accelerated Reader quizzes after they finish books, are enthralled by self-guided Compass Learning lessons teachers create, and can play on PBSKids as a reward. Headphones for each laptop would cut down on the interruptions and distractions a class of nearly 30 inevitably produces. Having a mouse for each laptop will increase the speed and accuracy with which students navigate computer programs -- laptop tracking pads are tricky for 8-year-olds! I plan to use the typing reference book to integrate mini-lessons about typing skills into our existing computer time. There's always more to learn for my students!
The greatest resource isn't much good without great tools to access it.
Using laptops in class will be so much more effective for my students if each is equipped with headphones, a mouse, and a teacher ready to teach them the tricks of typing. We thank you in advance for your support!
