As a magnet school teacher, I am blessed to work with students coming from incredibly diverse backgrounds. I teach students who reside in my city and the surrounding communities. My students deserve the very best education and every opportunity possible in their early years of education as they learn and grow into adolescents. I don't want my students to miss out on any educational opportunities they should be receiving due to the poor financial situation the city faces and lack of funding being provided to the schools. My students deserve the best and should not have to miss out because of the city's financial struggles.
My Project
Three years ago, I was able to begin a drumline program for my students with 8 marching percussion instruments. Since then, and with the support of Donors Choose and donors like you, I have been able to build the program to include instruments for 22 students! This year alone I have 92 students who have signed up to learn to become drummers. In fact, the program has become so popular that it has become an official "class" at the school instead of being a pull-out program. This is incredible! I have students begging to come in before and after school for extra lessons and practice time. My heart is so full knowing that my students are finding joy in making music!
With the incredible popularity and growth of the program also comes the associated maintenance costs.
The amount of time that drums are being played is directly related to the need to replace drumheads. The wear and tear of student practice and rehearsals takes a toll on the drumheads and they lose their ability to stay resonate, as well as stay in tune (yes, drums do need to be tuned!)
Students are performing for events both within school walls as well as at outside events. My heart is so full with the incredible opportunities my students are receiving and the lifelong benefits of being a part of a performing ensemble. Thank you for supporting my students and their future!
