I am a fourth grade self contained teacher (I teach them all subjects) with 25 students, 16 of these students are Katrina survivors. Seventy percent of our students are on free or reduced lunches. The majority of my class is performing 1-2 years behind grade level. With 25 students it is difficult to give them the small group or individual tutoring they need to increase their grade level performance.
I am writing to request a class set of the Leap Frog Pads along with the accompanying software/books. I will use these pads in several ways. First, I plan to develop classroom activities around the software so all the children will be engaged. Second, I will have them available for students to use when they finish their other assignments for extra drill and practice on their math or reading skills. Third, I will use them as one of the activities the students will rotate through when I plan small group lessons.
There are many benefits to using Leap Frog Pads in a classroom. By fourth grade struggling students realize they have a problem, many have given up, and believe they are unable to learn. The Leap Frog Pads foster a feeling of independence which helps to rebuild these students' self esteem. Leap Frog pads are fun to use so the kids do not realize they are working hard and are learning, which helps them overcome this block. This keeps them engaged and allows me to pull individuals or small groups to work on specific skills in which they need additional reinforcement.
As you can see the Leap Frog Pads will be a fabulous teaching tool that will allow me to see increased productivity and to progress more quickly toward my goal of every student reading and performing on their grade level. I believe these children have the ability; I just need help insuring they are not among the individuals who are being "Left Behind". Please help me by funding this request for a class set of Leap Frog Pads and the accompanying software.
