I have taught first grade for the last 26 years and, for the last few years, I have had the Special Education Inclusion room. The children I have worked with have many different needs, and I have found that setting the mood for learning helps a tremendous amount.
Part of setting the mood for learning includes the correct lighting.
My students work hard every day, but have been bothered lately with the brightness of the fluorescent lights in my classroom. So much that I have had to turn off some of them to help them learn better. But sometimes turning them off makes it too dark to see what we are doing.
I want to give them the environment they need to learn in with the appropriate lighting every moment.
My Project
Appropriate lighting helps students learn better. Children can be bothered by the glare and brightness of the fluorescent lights used in classrooms. They complain of headaches and eyestrain, and this takes away from their learning.
I have seen other teachers in my building beginning to use new light filters and they say it helps with the brightness and glare of the fluorescent lighting that can cause these issues.
I believe that having these light filters in my classroom will help all my students learn better, especially the ones who have special needs. I found a set of light filters that can be used during the school year. They contain three different filters to be used during the different seasons. Other teachers have said how much they have helped the students in their classrooms and how they have made a difference in setting the mood for a better learning environment.
I want to give my students every chance they need to learn more and be successful when they are in my classroom and that includes setting the mood. I believe that having these light filters will help me do that!
