My students visit our school library both on their own and with their classes. They eagerly flock to my shelves to read books that spark their interests. Keeping the library shelves stocked with compelling books, and keeping those books in good condition, can be a difficult task.
My students are a great bunch of kids, from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
With all of my students, nearly every genre and subject are in demand. When students have access to books that interest them, they love to read. Our students tend to be less economically well off, and I want to ensure that they still have equal access to the materials that are available to students in wealthier neighborhoods.
My Project
One of the biggest problems in a school library is getting students to return their library books on time and in good condition. When hundreds of students are waiting for a new Wimpy Kid book, it is imperative to make sure that book makes its way back to school quickly. However, it can be difficult to get students to remember to bring books back in a few weeks -- which means that other students miss out.
Most libraries use penalties to get books back; I want to try rewarding good library behavior.
I'm implementing a positive behavior reward system: students who read books and return them on time will have the opportunity to win small incentive prizes - books, journals, pencils, pens, erasers, etc.. I have an assortment of materials already in place and in use -- but we need more!
