My Students

In my classroom, I have students who have reading levels ranging from 1st grade to 5th grade. Through this grant, I am trying to expand my classroom library to meet the wide range of reading levels in my classroom. With your support, my students will be able to read books at their just right levels.

My students are creative, curious, intelligent, and passionate about their education.

About 40% of my students are English language learners or have speech and language needs. Our school is located in a large, urban city in Northern California. My students come to school every day eager to learn and grow. They love learning! My students inspire me to be the best teacher I can be. In third grade, students are expected to develop their reading skills so that they can focus on "reading to learn" rather than on learning to read. Indeed, all the work we do in third grade truly sets up students to succeed in upper elementary school and beyond!

My Project

Our nation has recently adopted a new set of standards for language arts. These Common Core Standards focus on students being able to read complex texts, analyze literature, and synthesize important ideas. In order to teach reading successfully, I need a collection of books which provides my students with a rich exposure to content area texts and a variety of literary genres. Additionally, I am requesting books in a variety of reading levels so that all of my students can build successful experiences in reading. After examining my current collection of reading materials, I realized that my collection is lacking multiple copies of books that I can read with small groups of students. The books that I am asking for will allow my students to access high-quality fiction and nonfiction texts within their reading level.

Donating to this project will ensure that my students gain access to high-quality literature, which is a crucial need of third grade students as they prepare to enter middle school, high school, and college!

These materials will be used daily to foster critical thinking and the development of strong literacy foundations for all of my students. Your donation will contribute to the literacy success of many third grade classes as I will be able to use the books year after year.
