Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations, something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.
I am a 6th grade teacher in one tough neighborhood!
Although our school is located in an area notorious for high rates of poverty and crime, my students love learning and are always looking for ways to improve their reading!
One of my goals is to ensure that my students develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime. However, my school only provides us with textbooks in which students read short excerpts from stories, and never get to read "real" books!
My Project
To make reading more exciting, I am looking for various books that will challenge my students reading levels yet provide them with rich stories that they can connect with. We need 25 copies of "Maniac Magee" to enjoy as a class. This book contains characters that overcome odds, face difficult decisions, and have challenges in relationships. When kid's are connected, they are more likely to comprehend more, which will improve their reading scores overall.
With your help, my students could have access to real books and have the opportunity to practice important comprehension skills that will help raise test scores!
Please help to continue the joy of reading in our classroom!
