Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

High school band is an great opportunity for scholars to learn the importance of team work and discipline. It is also a chance for teenagers to express themselves in a positive way. These scholars understand that their performances promote community pride and that they are part of something that is bigger than themselves.

90% of these students come from low income families and do not have the extra resources available to buy their own instruments or help contribute to fundraisers.

These kids love what they do and show up early and stay late every day to practice. Many of them cannot practice in their apartments because of the sound bleed from one unit to another. For many of my students, being in band and playing an instrument is giving them opportunities that will help them succeed after they leave high school.

My Project

My inner city students deserve the opportunity to feel proud of their musical accomplishments and not feel inferior to their suburban counter parts. With kids tuned into technology in all areas of their lives, incorporating sound equipment into marching band can excite them and keep them coming back for more.

Adding electronics can make our program more accessible to the audience, by making the music more listenable and relatable.

More and more marching bands are using technology and incorporating electronics into their practice, rehearsal, performances and marching competitions. Technology in education is here to stay, in some capacity or another, and my students deserve the opportunity to use it to realize their true potential.
