This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am working hard to advance my first graders' reading levels, but I am running out of book sets to use during our small guided reading groups. I need more sets of books in order to continue the work that my students and I are doing.
I teach 24 students in an urban school where most of the students are children of immigrants, learning English, and are very eager to learn.
Most of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. They see school as a safe place where they can rely on predictable routines and a lot of exciting learning. Their hard work motivates me to seek out the very best for them.
My Project
My school's reading teacher and I are working together closely in order to meet each reading group every day. We have assessed all students, placed them in groups, and have selected the skills that we are each teaching depending on need. Our goal is to advance students' reading levels so that they become more proficient and confident as readers. We have a school collection of book sets that we can borrow for small group instruction, but these books are shared amongst all teachers and we are running out of books to use. I need to collect more books to give my students the reading practice they need.
First grade is the time when students really learn to read.
My goals are that they fall in love with books, they zoom through the levels of difficulty in order to be able to read more interesting books, and they develop the foundations to become lifelong readers. Thank you for helping my achieve these goals by providing book sets for small reading groups!
