This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a school where about a quarter of our students have special needs and about 80% are economically disadvantaged. We are in an urban city that is rated the worst in the nation for large urban cities. Our funding is repeatedly cut by politicians. My school's population is around 90% African American.
We service students from the areas that have been hardest hit by poverty, lack of jobs, mental illness, childhood trauma, and civil unrest.
These students deserve more. They truly lack the "privilege" that their suburban counterparts share. The students are in desperate need of basic supplies and relying on the kindness of donations.
My Project
My students need the basic supplies that support their diverse cultural backgrounds and learning styles. Often my students come to school with no supplies. The supplies that I provide are used up quickly and aggressively.
The factors against my children are extreme, and we need the generosity of our community to help supplement our needs.
Our school is old. We are always looking for ways to upgrade, update, and create an inviting learning environment.
I picked out some motivational posters to help with school climate and cultural diversity. There are pens, pencils, and paper for the students who are most in need of basic supplies. We also run out of printer paper fast. Students really enjoy printing up their papers to post in the room.
Every day, there is dialogue about recognizing individual strengths while working across racial, cultural, and ideological boundaries toward goals of unity and mutual respect. Without the basic necessities like pens and pencils, it is difficult to focus on the broader, more important issues of life-scaping.
