My elementary is located in a high poverty area of Las Vegas, Nevada. One hundred percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. They come from extremely diverse backgrounds, and they struggle with behavior, academics, and many with second language acquisition. Many of my students come to me in second grade unable to read at grade level-they are at early kindergarten reading levels.
Many of my students experience homelessness and struggle to have foundational skills in reading such as fluency and comprehension.
My students depend on our school for stability, differentiated learning, and a quality education. Having books available for my students at a kindergarten reading level is essential in building readers. I have a few books at early kindergarten level but not many and it makes it difficult to increase reading skills. In order to give my students every opportunity to be successful readers I need books at their reading level!
My Project
My class desperately needs accelerated reader books that are at a kindergarten level. I need books that will both engage and motivate my students to read.
Although I am a second grade teacher, I have many students who have an early kindergarten reading level, and I don't have many books at this reading level.
I have chosen books that students will want to read, but also books that will continue to build on fluency and comprehension reading levels as the year progresses. My goal is to have all of my second graders at grade level by the end of the current school year! Please help me to reach that goal!
