Help! I am Lost in the US and I Can't Find my Way Home.
My students need 5 copies of United States Atlas, 5 copies of National Geographic Our Fifty States, 5 copies of Fifty States (Fandex Family Field Guide), 2 Copies of Fifty States Every Question, and single copies of other reference and activity books.
Have you ever traveled the United States? I have been fortunate to travel some of it unlike the students that I teach. Teaching in a high-needs community means that a large number of my current and future students have not, and will not have, the opportunity to enjoy such an experience.
Our 4th grade curriculum for Social Studies is Kansas History and the five regions of the United States. Due to state budget cuts, resources for getting classroom reference materials are not available. I am needing to provide students with a first-hand experience of traveling the United States without actually leaving the classroom. I currently have some wonderful activity books that will allow the students to do just that. However, I do not have the necessary reference materials to do the projects and activities that go along with the book. Our current text book only offers a very limited amount of information to assist in these activities as well as being very outdated. Our school library does not have Social Studies specific reference materials either.
Therefore, I am requesting a variety of different reference resource materials - including atlases, National Geographic books, and geography texts - for my room that the students can use to look up current information on the states and use to write reports and create other projects that go along with the activity book that I currently have.
Memorizing facts for a test is boring and seems unnecessary to a 4th grader. I am hoping that you will help me in my efforts to provide my students with an opportunity to travel the United States without leaving the classroom and enable them to learn the needed curriculum through these travels.
