I teach self-contained special education at James Madison High School in Brooklyn New York. My students range in reading level from second grade to seventh grade. I currently teach a 90-minute literacy block. A good portion of this block is dedicated to independent reading. The library I have available for my students has very few books at the student's grade level. Additionally traditional books at my students reading level are insulting for high school students. I would like to purchase a library of high interest, low-level books for my students.
Additionally, as the year has gone on I have learned that my students respond to listening to books on tape and CD. Throughout the year I have recorded books on tape myself, and purchased books on CD. I would like to purchase listening stations, tapes, and CDs that give my students the ability to feel like true independent readers. By providing students with these resources, they have the ability to gain a love for reading that can help them succeed in life.
There are currently four self-contained English classes of 15 students that would benefit from the library and listening stations. Next fall that number will grow to 5 self-contained English classes of 15 students.
