This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Currently, I teach fifth grade in a high poverty, urban, public school.

My students live in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods that benefit from support and resources for learning.

My classroom population is ninety percent minority with more than half being English language learners.

My students are beyond amazing! They come from a variety of countries that include Nigeria, Ethiopia, Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Mexico. They work so hard to not only master the necessary fifth grade curriculum, but also the English language. Many of them come from single family homes with hardworking families who are struggling to make it.

My Project

It is the time of year where seasonal depression and the weather takes its toll on humans and especially kiddos. My students health and wellness is always my top priority. Research shows that students benefit from having recess each day. However, with temps below freezing, we have to move it indoors.

Exercising the brain and body, while working together to create positive relationships with our peers is what matters most.

These resources that include board games, a limbo set, as well as an indoor soccer game will enable students to engage in both physical and mental activities that help them through this time of year as they continue building positive relationships and other life long skills.
